Coming home to missing electronics, jewelry, or other valuables, with a broken window and unlocked door, can be any holiday traveler's nightmare. But it doesn't need to become a reality. Below are a few ways to help keep your home safe during this holiday season when you are having a fun holiday vacation.
Keep Your Travel Discreet
Everyone wants to tell the world if they are able to go to Hawaii for a week during Christmas, but you may want to keep it to yourself—especially online. Burglars can use the information you post to social media sites to know that no one will be home. This makes your home an easy target.
Check Twice and Don't Worry
Before you leave, make sure you lock all your doors and windows. Checking them not just once, but twice, will help you feel secure that your home is safe while you are away.
Hide Your Valuables
Just in case, it is always a smart idea to make sure that you hide all of your valuables. If you don't hide them, then at least keep them out of plain sight and from the view of a window.
Make It Appear Like Someone Is Home
Burglars are less likely to break in if they think someone is home. Have your neighbor park in your driveway, or set timers for your lights, so that it appears that people are still at your home.
Know Your Insurance
No matter what actions you take to protect your home while you are away, make sure that you have your insurance up to date and that you are satisfied with what it covers. This will save you from tons of stress, even if nothing happens at all.
