8 Safety Tips for the 4th of July

SparklerWhat would the 4th of July be without fireworks? Probably a lot safer, but not nearly as much fun. So if you plan to proudly set off fireworks as a symbol of your patriotism this Independence Day, follow these 8 tips to keep yourself and those around you safe:

1. Don't let small children handle fireworks

Small children should not be holding or lighting fireworks, and don't let teenagers light fireworks without close adult supervision.

2. Have a fire extinguisher on hand for emergencies

Be ready in the event a small fire breaks out, so that it doesn't become a big fire.

3. Keep a bucket of water close by

This isn't only to douse any fires that might erupt. It's also a good idea to use a bucket of water to soak any duds and safely dispose of them.

4. Don't mix alcohol and fireworks

Bad things tend to happen when fireworks are combined with alcohol. At the very least, make sure the person handling and lighting fireworks is sober.

5. Wear protective eye gear

Even small fireworks can do irreparable damage to your eyes. If you're lighting fireworks, eye protection can wind up saving your vision.

6. Don't relight duds

Like stated above, soak them in water before disposing of them

7. Only light fireworks one at a time

This includes sparklers!

8. Don't use illegal or home-made fireworks

They're banned for a reason—they have the potential to seriously harm or kill you.
Fireworks during the 4th of July is one of America's great past times. Help make sure this proud tradition continues for years to come, and always play it safe around fireworks!
