5 Tips to Extend the Life of Your Car

A car is quite a serious investment, with even the cheapest automobiles costing thousands of dollars. Once you factor in all the insurance payments, fuel costs, and maintenance fees, your personal vehicle represents a major asset. While it would be wonderful to possess a car that would continue to run forever, there will come a day when your mighty metal steed ceases to function. However, if you follow these tips, you can greatly extend your car's life.

1. Drive Sparingly

Many people regard their car as a quick way to reach a destination. And it's true; a car will get you somewhere a lot faster than walking. However, it's important to keep in mind that the more you use your car, the faster it will break down. So if you can walk or take the bus, go for it.

2. Be a Gentle Driver

While it may be fun to mash the accelerator pedal to the floor, this isn't great for your car. Routinely pushing your car to high speeds can shorten the life of the tires, brakes, and engine. So be gentle with it.

3. Listen to Your Car

Being attentive to your car's needs is vital. Watch for warning lights or strange sounds while driving for signs that your car may need a check up.

4. Keep it Cool

Maintaining optimal engine temperature is a great preventative measure. Engines that get too hot can cause astounding amounts of damage, but this can be avoided by ensuring that the proper type and amount of coolant is used.

5. Check Your Tires

People don't often think about the tires, but it's important to keep them at the right pressure level and inspect them for signs of wear. A blown tire will not only cause damage, but can also be dangerous.

Be smart and treat your car with care, and your vehicle will be around for a lot longer than anticipated. Go even further to protect your car from unexpected accidents and problems with auto insurance.
